Biography

Matthew Hogan was born in Warwick Queensland on 30 October 1872 (Source: Queensland birth registration 1872/C/3834).

Four and a half years after his father’s untimely death, Matthew’s mother was failing to cope and put some of her children in care. In January 1878, Matthew was placed in the Industrial and Reformatory School for Boys as a neglected child (source: Series ID 986, Admission Register to the Industrial and Reformatory School for Boys, 1871-1906). He was five years old. At the time, the Reformatory School for Boys was located on the former prison hulk “Proserpine” on the Brisbane River at Lytton, originally established for juvenile offenders under the age of 18, but evidently used for broader purposes by the time Matthew was admitted (Source: http://www.findandconnect.gov.au/qld/biogs/QE00386b.htm). It’s not hard to imagine the damaging effects abandonment then virtual imprisonment may have had on a five year old child. Matthew was discharged a few months later, to where it is not clear.

Matthew married Lucina Kirwan in Queensland in Queensland on 7 December 1896 (Source: Queensland marriage registration 1896/C/54). The couple had nine children between 1898 and 1909, one of whom died as an infant (Source: Queensland birth and death registrations). Like his father and namesake, Matthew Hogan died young and left a young family behind. He died on 22 August 1911 in St George Queensland at the age of 38 (Source: Queensland death registration 1911/C/114). His eight surviving children were aged between two and 12 years old when he died. Matthew’s wife, Lucinda, married again, but died 12 years later at the young age of 44 years (Source: Queensland death registration 1923/B/40974).
