Biography

PARENTS Eligah Hutley & Winifred Donohue who lived at Drumcullen Ireland in 1859 ARRIVED Aust, 1850 on 'Tippoo Saib' age 14, had 'poor' health on arrival, RC who could read, with not relatives in the colony. MARRIED Matthew Hogan at Warwick Qld 1863. He was a laborer and she a domestic servant. Both living at Glengallan Qld LATER they operated a hotel at Stanthorpe where he was involved in community events and mining. HUSBAND Matthew died June 25, 1873 age about 34, leaving Mary Ann and 5 children under 10

After the death of her husband, Mary Ann continued to maintain the license on the Sunburst Hotel until 1875, briefly joined by Matthew’s brother Patrick in 1875 (Source: 1875 'Advertising.', Warwick Examiner and Times (Qld. : 1867 - 1919), 13 March, p. 3, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article82105787; 1875 'Advertising.', Warwick Examiner and Times (Qld. : 1867 - 1919), 20 March, p. 4, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article82105814). However, she evidently had difficulty coping with her situation.

In January 1878, youngest son Matthew was placed in the Industrial and Reformatory School for Boys as a neglected child (source: Series ID 986, Admission Register to the Industrial and Reformatory School for Boys, 1871-1906). He was five years old. At the time, the Reformatory School for Boys was located on the former prison hulk “Proserpine” on the Brisbane River at Lytton, originally established for juvenile offenders under the age of 18, but evidently used for broader purposes by the time Matthew was admitted (Source: http://www.findandconnect.gov.au/qld/biogs/QE00386b.htm). It’s not hard to imagine the damaging effects abandonment then effective imprisonment may have had on a five year old child. Matthew was discharged a few months later, to where it is not clear.

The two eldest daughters, Winifred and Mary, were admitted to Nudgee Orphanage in Brisbane in January 1878 (Source: St Vincent's, Nudgee records (Qld Archives)). The reason for the admission was recorded as follows:

"Father dead. Mother leading an immoral life. Sent by Warwick Bench of Magistrates."

Winifred and Mary were discharged a year later to Mrs Schicooski (probably Scheikowski) in Fortitude Valley to work as nursegirls. They would have been 10 and 12 years old at this time.

Eldest son, Michael, would have been almost 14 when his two sisters and brother went into care, and it seems he was considered old enough to get a job and look after himself.

Youngest daughter, Sarah, may have been more fortunate than her siblings. She was brought up by Hogan family friends. Sarah (O’Keeffe) Ward, a great niece of Matthew Hogan through her mother and a cousin once removed through her father, wrote in her 1973 memoir:

"They left a little daughter in the care of old friends, Tim Dwyer and his wife. Tim’s people and the Hogans were old neighbours at home."

Mary Ann (Hutley) Hogan had another son on 16 March 1877 in Warwick who she named Elisha (or Elijah) and gave the surname Hutley (Source: Queensland birth registration 1877 / 5268). The child was recorded as illegitimate and no name was recorded for the father. I can find no further definitive record of Mary Ann after November 1879, when she handed Elisha over to an orphanage in Brisbane (Source: Queensland State Archives). Sarah (O’Keeffe) Ward stated in her memoir that both Matthew and Mary Ann died young (Source: As Slow Our Ship, part 2, 1973, pp.24-25, Sarah Ward nee O'Keeffe, Kerry near Beaudesert, Queensland). Likewise, I can find no record of Elisha’s life after the orphanage.
