Joseph Amable Hogue was born on the 30 December 1835, in St. James Parish in the Red River Settlement to his parents Amable Hogue and Margaret Taylor. [1] His father Louis Amable, who was 39 at the time of his birth, was a French Canadian fur trader and voyageur, who had retired from the Hudson's Bay company. His mother Margaret Taylor, who was 31 at the time of his birth, was a Métis woman born in York Factory to a British HBC sloopmaster and an Indigenous woman, and had once been the country wife of HBC governor George Simpson.
Joseph grew up on his parents farm, in what is now Fort Garry. Talking about the farm decades later, Joseph said
"We raised barley, oats, potatoes, peas, poultry, sheep, horses and cattle. We had wood plows and no machinery at all. Our crops were fairly good. [we raised] animals specially adapted for buffalo hunting, swift as the wind, true as steel, real, rollicking animals which had more the nature of the Indian developers than horse nature as we understand it today."[2]
As a young adult, Joseph used to hunt buffalo on both sides of the Manitoba-Dakota, apparently in competition with local "Sioux Indians" who depended on the meat for sustenance. Upon return from one of his hunting trips, after "proving his worth" to the older men, at the age of 23 he courted and then married a 15 year old Pelagie Turcotte on 11 January, 1859 in the Saint Boniface church. [2] They would be married for over 60 years, and had twelve children together.
After their wedding, the Hudson's Bay Company gifted Joseph and his new wife Lot No. 56, which was located along the Assiniboine river. [3] [2]
He is first found in the 1870 Census of Manitoba, living in the parish of St. Charles. According to the census he is 36 years old, born in Manitoba, and he is French Métis and a British subject. He is living with his wife Pelagie (28), and five of their children, Rosalie (11), William (10), Philomene (6), Sarah (4), and Alexander (2). [4]
On the 16 August 1875 in the parish of St. Charles, he provided an affidavit in order to claim a Métis scrip. According to the scrip record he provided his affidavit in French, and declared his father, Amable, to be French Canadian and his mother, Margaret Taylor, to be a "half-breed". He was awarded $160 on the 12 July, 1876.[1]
In the 1881 Census he is a 41 year old farmer living in the Assiniboia sub-district with his wife Pelagie (37), and their children Rosalie (21), William (19), Philomene (16), Sarah (13), Alexander (11), Mary Jane (9), Joseph (7), Margaret (5), Patrick (2), and Albina (1). [5]
In the 1891 Census, he is a 56 year old farmer living in St. Francois Xavier with his wife Pelagie (48) and their children Sarah (23), Alexander (21), Marie Jane (20), Joseph (18), Maggie (15), Patrice (12), Albina (10), Wilfred (9), and Harry (4). [6]
In the 1901 Census, his birthday is listed as 30 December 1834 (which seems to be an error). His ethnicity is listed as Cree French and he is still a farmer, living in the Assiniboia census district. He is living with his wife Pelagie (57), his mother in law Madeleine Turcotte (82), and his children Maggie (25), Patrick (22), Albina (21), Wilfred (19), Harry (14) as well as his granddaughter Clara McDougall (3). [7]
In the 1906 Prairie Province Census, he is 71 years old and living with his family on River Lot 60 in St. Charles Parish, with 8 horses, 3 milk cows, and 5 hogs. It appears that most of his children have since moved out, and is now living with his wife Pelagie (62), and his sons Fred (24) and Henry (20). [8]
By the 1911 Census he is 76 years old, still living in St. Charles, now with only his wife Pelagie (68). They both appear to be retired as their occupation is listed as "none". [9]
The final census he can be located in is the 1916 Prairie Province Census, in which he is 81 years old, living in St. Charles Parish with his wife who is 72. [10]
On the 11 January, 1919, an article was published in the Manitoba Free Press featuring Joseph and Pelagie, celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary, titled Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hogue Both Born in Manitoba, Wedded 60 Years Today. According to the article, they had 114 descendants at the time, in addition to their 12 children.[2]
He passed away on the 34 March, 1924, in Assiniboia, Manitoba. He was 89 years old. [11]
