Notes

  • The Holmans of Virginia, Harry Stuart Holman[1]

"Tandy Holman was born in Tidewater, Virginia about 1695. He married about 1719 in York County, Virginia, to Mary Wagstaff, daughter of the late Basil Wagstaff, Jr. (d. 1719) of York County. Mary was one of nine children--each of whom had just received valuable property, including a gold mouning ring, from their deceased father. Tandy appears in the York records in 1726 as a county resident making application to serve as a guardian of Mildred Wagstaff, Mary's sister. In making this request, Tandy was required to post a bond, showing he was a man of property. He also signed the application, showing he was to some degree educated. Shortly after this time, the Tandy Holman family, which included a few children at this time, moved to Caroline County in the heart of the Old Dominion. It was there in 1731 that John Holman, their youngest child, was born. The family was affiliated with the Anglican Church in the St. Paul's Parish, Stafford County. It was there that their youngest child was baptized in the summer of 1731. About three years later, Tandy Holman of Caroline County died. Only the will index remains. It shows that the estate was settled in 1734 and was settled by Col. Anthony Thornton, evidently a friend of the Holmans. Many years later, Tandy Holman, Jr.'s will makes reference to this will of Tandy Holman, showing that he had ordered if any of his sons should die without issue, the surviving brothers should have his part. Without the actual will or deeds, one can only guess what property was left to Tandy's young widow and the five small children.

Children:
1. Mary, b. 1720 in York County m. Charles Rice.
2. Elizabeth, b. about 1721 in York County and m. Collohill Mennis.
3. Tandy, Jr. b. about 1722/3 in York County, never married.
4. William, b. about 1725 in York County and m. Susannah Thompson.
5. John, B. July 13, 1731, Caroline County, Va., and m. Susannah Yancey.

  • EARLY HOLMANS IN VIRGINIA, David Emory Holman [2]

"The earliest records yet found are in 1635. A land grant to Thomas Holman, of James City County.

Family tradition (not yet proven by record) dates back to the landing of four brothers in 1610 at Jamestown after one year's delay by shipwreck on the Bermuda Islands, in company with Sir Thomas Gates, a fleet of nine ves- sels (with 500 people) having sailed from England in 1607, Newport being commander; Sir Thos. Gates was to be Lieutenant Governor of A^irginia. When within a few days (about eight) of the shores of Virginia, they were caught in the tail of a hurricane and The Sea Venture with the rulers was separated from the rest of the company and finally landed on the Bermudas. (Ref. John Esten Cook's "Virginia" in "American Commonwealth.")

James Holman of Goochland County was a member of the House of Bur- gesses, beginning with a land grant Eeb. 18, 1722.

His brother, Henry Holman, was in the same County in 1739. His Will was probated Aug. 19, 1740. His wife was named Mourning. They had children, (1) William, (2) Sarah, b , 1739.

James was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, 1736 to 1740. (Ref. " Colonial Va.," by Stanard.) Paid two tithables in 1835. (Ref. " Wm. and Mary College Quarterly," Vol. 8.) Granted State Land patents 1722 to 1746—2841 acres in Goochland County. (Eef. Land Office Records, Richmond.) Other lauds bought of private parties in- same County. (Ref. Goochland County Records.) 1745 deeds 200 acres of land to only son James for " Love and affection, &c., in Mannikintown, south side of the James River, now in Cumberland County. (Ref. Goochland County Records.) James' funeral was preached June 12, 1759. (Eef. Douglas Goochland Parish Reg.) He was referred to as a planter and gentleman. This first James mar- ried Sarah (Mrs. or possibly Miss) Woodward. Mary Woodward and her daughter, Sarah, receive deed for 75 acres of land from James Holman, who refers to her as his wife's eldest daughter, June 4, 1742.

William Woodward, of James City Comity, reeieves deed for 100 acres lying near Sarah's, for the consideration of 37 pounds and 10s., June 16, 1755.

His only son James died before Nov. 23, 1761, as per probation of Will. He married Jane; they had 7 children.

The name of Tandy Holman appears in this same County in 1756, and his will was filed Nov. 13, 1760, in Albemarle County, Virginia.
