Thomas Barton Holmes was born in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, England.

Thomas was born in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, England, on March 25, 1836. He was the son of Thomas Holmes and Elizabeth Barton. He was baptized on June 2, 1836, in Hull, at Holy Trinity (Wesleyan Methodist). He appeared in the 1841 and 1851 census residing with his family on Anlaby Road, Hull. In 1851 he was fifteen, single, and a "Tanner".

Thomas married Sarah Foster in 1860. The marriage was registered in the third quarter in Hull. The couple was enumerated in the 1861 census residing at 8 Corbury Terrace, Hull. His occupation "Tanner". They were living at 4 Balmoral Terrace, Myton (Hull), in 1871. Six children at residence ages nine to one year old. Thomas was a "Tanner and Senior Partner". Thomas, Sarah, and eighteen year old daughter Gertrude were listed as Boarders in the household of Elijah Finga, Wells Road, Great Malvern, Worcestershire. His occupation listed as "Tanner Partner of Holmes and Sons".

Thomas, Sarah, and six children, ages twenty nine to ten, were living on Cliff Road (Elim Lodge), Hornsea with Burton, (reg. Dist. Skirlaugh), Yorkshire, in 1891. Thomas was a "Tanner J.P.C.C." He appeared in the 1901 and 1911 census residing in Hornsea, Yorkshire.

Thomas passed away on September 11, 1913, in Hornsea. His death was registered in Skirlaugh. His Probate was administered on February 10, 1914, naming George Foster Holmes, Thomas Barton Holmes, and Harold Edwin Holmes.
