Biography

John was the son of Elizabeth Holbrow and William Hopkins, Blacksmith. John was baptised on May 29 at St Mary de Lode, Gloucester.

William Hopkins, Blacksmith, lived in Tetbury and at the time of the 1851 Census was widowed and living next to to George and Elizabeth Smith. Their daughter Ann married his son John in 1848.

John also worked as a Farrier/Blacksmith and later operated as a Veterinary Surgeon in the town of Stroud, Gloucestershire. It's likely he did both occupations during his working day, as was the nature of the Blacksmithing trade at the time. John is recorded as Veterinary Surgeon in the Census.

He had 2 marriages, firstly to Eliza (Lizzy) Harding. Witnesses to their wedding were William and Ursula Harding. Eliza died in 1840.

In the 1851 Census their grandson John (son of John and Ann Hopkins) was staying with his grandparents,George and Elizabeth Smith.

John's second marriage was to widow, Maria (Webley) Dee in 1841. James Webley and Henry Stafford stood as their witnesses.

Maria had a son from her first marriage, Edward William Dee.

Two of John's sons, Thomas and John Harding, were to follow in his footsteps and become Vets.

Four of the children were to emigrate to New Zealand, Eliza in 1859 and stepson Edward in 1858 , Salome and Louisa in 1864.

John died in 1862 aged 76 and was buried at Stonehouse.

The year following John's death, Maria made the voyage to New Zealand with daughters, Salome and Louisa on the 'Anne Dymes', but she died 3 weeks before they made land. [1]
