Biography

William Hopton, Knt., of Westwood, Suffolk, Swillington, Yorkshire, etc., was the son and heir of John Hopton and his first wife, Margaret Saville.^[1] His date and place of birth are unknown. His birth is estimated to be about 1429, based on his parents' marriage date and birth order.

William was Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk from 1466-7 and1479-80 and was a member of King Richard III's Privy Council, and Treasurer of the Household to King Edward IV.^[1] He was a trusted companion to Richard III and was knighted at his coronation.^[2]

He married about April 1451 to Margaret Wentworth, daughter of Roger Wentworth, Esq. of Nettlestead, Suffolk, by Margery, daughter and heiress of Philip Despencer, Knt.^[1]

They had one son and three daughters:

• George, Knt.^[1]
• Margaret, married Philip Booth, Knt., of Shrubland, Suffolk^[1]
• Agnes, married to Robert Clere, K.B. and had five children. Agnes died 23 January 1505/6.^[1]
• Audrey^[1]

William's wife, Margaret, died on 20 April 1478, and Sir William died 7 February 1484.^[1]

Research Note

William Hopton is a descendant of William the Conqueror.^{[citation needed][3]}
