Biography

William Hopton, Knt., of Westwood, Suffolk, Swillington, Yorkshire, etc., was the son and heir of John Hopton and his first wife, Margaret Saville.[1] His date and place of birth are unknown. His birth is estimated to be about 1429, based on his parents' marriage date and birth order.

William was Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk from 1466-7 and1479-80 and was a member of King Richard III's Privy Council, and Treasurer of the Household to King Edward IV.[1] He was a trusted companion to Richard III and was knighted at his coronation.[2]

He married about April 1451 to Margaret Wentworth, daughter of Roger Wentworth, Esq. of Nettlestead, Suffolk, by Margery, daughter and heiress of Philip Despencer, Knt.[1]

They had one son and three daughters:

  • George, Knt.[1]
  • Margaret, married Philip Booth, Knt., of Shrubland, Suffolk[1]
  • Agnes, married to Robert Clere, K.B. and had five children. Agnes died 23 January 1505/6.[1]
  • Audrey[1]

William's wife, Margaret, died on 20 April 1478, and Sir William died 7 February 1484.[1]

Research Note

William Hopton is a descendant of William the Conqueror.[citation needed][3]

    • III:402 is the end of IREMONGER/beginning of ISHAM. Iremonger goes back to the sister of William the Conqueror. Isham goes through three kings of Scots but no mention of William the Conqueror immediately apparent.
    • III:312-315 HOPTON (which includes William, HOPTON 13) also goes through kings of Scots but no mention of William the Conqueror immediately apparent.
    • Relationship Finder (RF) shows a lineal descent (13th great grand, as of 22 Jan. 2020), but I would not consider RF a source (there are a lot of profiles in the trail that need work). ~ Noland-165, 22 Jan. 2020

Hi! I'm going through Magna Carta project's watchlist to ensure that profiles with PPP have a project as a manager (adding one if not when PPP is needed, or removing PPP if it's not needed). I removed project protection from this profile. If you believe it needs PPP, please let me know (via private message or a post to my profile... include the profile's WikiTree ID: Hopton-105). Since my previous post, the Magna Carta project now has a project box (Trail Pending) that can used for profiles not yet in a completed/project-approved trail.

Thanks!

I added the Magna Carta project to the trusted list. The profile cannot be managed by the project (it is not eligible to display the Magna Carta project box), but the project should be on the trusted list of profiles displaying the Magna Carta Project's sticker.

Give me a holler if you have any questions.

Cheers, Liz ~ leader, Project:Magna Carta

This profile is categorised within Yorkshire but I can find no reference to the county or any location within it. Could you confirm that it is appropriate and if so specify a place please?

There is a Westwood, part of Beverley, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, but this profiles Westwood is elsewhere Sent on behalf of the England Project, East Yorkshire

Hopton-42 and Hoptton-1 appear to represent the same person because: Hello! These two profiles are for the same person. Could you take a look, and if you agree, complete the merge?

Thank you, Lynden Raber Rodriguez
