Charles Merle Houpt died at home on Sunday, May 18, 2008. A graveside prayer service will be held at 5:00 pm today at Parkway Memorial Cemetery in Ridgeland, MS.

Charles was born on June 8, 1919, near Hagarstown, Maryland, the third of four children of Charles and Elizabeth Weller Houpt. Due to the early death of his parents, Charles was raised in an orphanage. At age 18, he became an apprentice baker. At age 19, he was drafted into the army for World War II and was stationed at Camp Shelby near Hattiesburg, MS. On leave he rode through Mount Olive, Mississippi where he providentially met and fell in love with Bernice King. They were married in the First Baptist Church of Jackson which they attended all the 64 years of their marriage. Charles said he never knew love until he met Bernice! After the war he worked at the VA Medical Center from which he retired. Charles was an amateur photographer and enjoyed taking pictures of nature and of sports teams in the Jackson area during the 1960's.

Charles was a Mason and a member of the Explorer Bible Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church Jackson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice King Houpt. Charles is survived by their only child, David Houpt and wife, Kathy; and his grandchildren, Carley Carroll Houpt and David Keeton Houpt all of Ridgeland.
