Bernice King Houpt died at home on Monday, August 6, 2007 with her husband of 64 years at her side. After a private family burial service the family will receive friends and family from 5-7 pm on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home on Highland Colony Parkway in Ridgeland.
Bernice King was born and raised in Covington County on June 9, 1919; one of seven children of Wheeler and Carrie McGilvary King. Bernice moved to Jackson in the early 1940's. She met and married Charles Merle Houpt of Waynesboro, PA in 1944. They were married in the First Baptist Church of Jackson where they were active participants all of the years of their married life. Bernice worked for 30 years at Crescent Laundry in downtown Jackson, until her retirement.
Next to her marriage to Charles, her greatest joy was her son, Charles David Houpt and her two grandchildren, Carley Carroll and David Keeton Houpt. Bernice loved the out of doors, visiting with friends and truly enjoyed shopping, especially at Maison Weiss. Her home and her family were her greatest loves.
Bernice is survived by her husband, Charles; her son, David and his wife, Kathy; and her two grandchildren, Carley and Keeton.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Bernice's memory to your favorite organization or to StaHome Hospice, 406 Briarwood Drive, Suite 500, Jackson, MS 39202.
