Oldest son of Caleb and Jemima (Sawtelle) Howe. born 5 May 1747 in what is now Vernon, Windham, Vermont. His father was killed by Indians on 27 July 1755, and his mother and her seven children were captured by Indians and taken to Canada. William was one of three sons (William, Squire, and Caleb) ransomed by Colonel Peter Schuyler, 800 livres for William and 1200 livres for Squire & Caleb[1]. Reports say he was a tory at the time of the Revolution and moved to Nova Scotia.[2]
The place of birth of William Howe in 1747 was previously attributed as Vernon, Windsor, Vermont which is the current political subdivision of the town. It is located in the southeast corner of Vermont, bordered by the Connectictut River with New Hampshire on the other side, and Massachusetts at its southern border. Wikitree's policy is to reflect the locations of events by their contemporary names. The name Vernon did not exist formally until 1802. According to Wikipedia "The town was chartered in 1672 as part of the Massachusetts Grant. In 1736 the area was granted by Massachusetts as part of Fall Town, and in 1753 the area was granted as Hinsdale. When the Connecticut River was established as a boundary, two separate towns were created: Hinsdale, New Hampshire and Hinsdale, Vermont. The people who lived in Hinsdale, Vermont wanted a separate name, and in 1802 the Vermont legislature changed the town's name to Vernon."[3]
