Biography

William was born in 1839.Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland. Parents being William Howie and Helen Merry. ^[1]

1841 Residence East Netherton Street, Ayrshire. William is just 2 years old, his mother Helen age recorded as 30 years and his father William, is about 35 years, occupation is that of a Cotton H L W. Siblings in the household are his Twin sisters, Mary age 11 and Helen age 11. All household members birth place recorded as Ayrshire. ^[2]

1849 His sister Mary marries Alexander Findlay, their marriage was registered in Galston, Ayr.

1851 Address East Netherton, Cunningham, Ayr. William age 11 years, is attending School (Scholar), His mother Helen age 43 years, father William, age recorded as 45 years, occupation Venetian Weaver. Sibling in the home is John age 5 years. ^[3]

Note: His sister Helen is not in the 1851 Census, she would be about 22 years I believe she is with her grandmother Mary (Wallace) Howie.

1861 William is not with his family when the census was taken, not sure where he is. In 1871 I believe I have located him in the Lower Part of Crosshill, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Age 31 years, occupation recorded as a Sugar Merchant, birthplace Ayrshire, Relationship to Head of Household a Lodger. ^[4]

1874 William marries Dorothy Hall. Their marriage was registered in Govan, Lanarkshire, Scotland. ^[5]

1881 Residence Kilmalcolm, Renfrewshire. William Howie, age 41 years, occupation Sugar Merchant, birthplace Ayrshire, his wife Dorothy Howie is about 42 years. Children in the household are Dora Howie age 6, birthplace Lanarkshire, Nettie Howie age 4 years, birthplace Lanarkshire and William Howie age recorded as 0 years, birthplace Renfrewshire.
