Biography

Hosea Q. Huckins was the 9th child of Daniel Huckins and Abigail Dow, born in 1832.[1]

In the 1850 census Hosea Q was in New Hampton, Belknap, New Hampshire, United States at the age of 17.[2] Oddly, the household is headed by Daniel and Abigail Huckins, be these are not his parents of the same names, since they are too young (33 and 28). He had siblings with those names, who would have been 36 and 26 that year according to some sources, so this is probably a household of 4 siblings. The 4th member of the household is Hosea's brother Dana, age 20. Note added later: Hosea's sister Abigail apparently died in 1849. If that is correct the Abigail in 1850 may be a sibling's spouse or perhaps a cousin.

In the 1860 census Hosea was at 5th Ward Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States.[3] The household appears to be a young family of 3 plus 6 boarders with different surnames, of which Hosea, age 27 and listed as a mason, was one.

H married Nelly D. Nickerson on 5 February 1863 in Provincetown, Barnstable, Massachusetts, United States.[4] There is a conflict here which needs to be resolved. Hosea and Helen are only listed as H and Nelly D, and his parents are shown as James and Mary. Her parents are Jess and Mary as expected.

Hosea Q appears in Boston tax assessment records as late as 1866, listed as a mason.[5]

The Hardon book indicates that Hosea and Helen had no children, and gives Hosea's date of death as 27 Dec 1867, less than two months after the death of his wife.[1][6]

Research Note

This profile is admittedly weak on sources, with no proper source for his birth or death. While most of the facts should be correct, it is troublesome that he listed different parents at the time of his marriage. It will be appreciated if someone can prove any of this right or wrong.
