Biography

According to his death certificate, Matt Huff was born 7 Mar 1855 in Gatesville, Texas (Coryell County). His parents were specified as Mattison Huff [sic, probably James Madison Huff] and Elizabeth Martin. In the 1900 census, Matt was enumerated as Madison Huff. Madison may be a middle name, thus far that has not been firmly determined.

Marriage

On 29 Jul 1880 in Gatesville, Coryell County, Texas, Matt Huff married Miss Susan Trammell. D. Quillen performed the marriage.[1] Parents were not specified but she may have been Susan Ann Trammell, daughter of Peter Thomas Trammell and Fairnetta Trammell.

Death & Burial

Matt Huff’s death was recorded in Johnson City, Blanco County, Texas. The name on the certificate was Matt Huff. He was widowed and had been a resident in the county for 20 years. His date and place of birth were 7 Mar 1855 in Gatesville, Texas (Coryell County) [Note: 1990 census indicated a birth state of Missouri]. The date of death was 27 Jan 1942 at 87 years, 11 months, and 20 days. His parents were specified as Mattison Huff [James Madison or Mattison Huff?] , born in Texas, and Elizabeth Martin, also born in Texas [these places of birth may not have been accurately reported by the informant?]. The place of burial was Cypress Mill, Blanco County, Texas. Felix Neuman [son-in-law] of Johnson City was the informant. The primary cause of death was cardiorenal syndrome; a contributory cause was senility.[2]

Checking Find A Grave, there is a Memorial for Mattison “Matt” Huff, born 7 May 1855 [sic, a FAG edit request to change a typo of May to Mar needs to be submitted, plus name change to Madison or James Madison or James Mattison?, if/when whatver was his full/birth name is verified and documented], Gatesville, Coryell County, Texas; died 27 Jan 1942, Johnson City, Blanco County, Texas; Burial: Holdman Cemetery, Cypress Mill, Blanco County, Texas. There was no grave photo (as of Mar 2020). [3] Also recorded at Holdman Cemetery, and indicated as sons of Matt and Susan, were: Elmer Huff, born 3 Aug 1886, died 3 Sep 1894 (aged 8), and an infant son, born 18 May 1891.
