Cleland Kinloch Huger was born in Stateburg on 19 Oct 1818. He was the son of Francis Huger and Harriott Pinckney. He received his early education near Pendleton and acquired his business training at Havre, where he honed his business skills. On 18 Jan 1842, as reported in the Marriage Notices of the Charleston Observer, he married Mary Augusta Dunkin.[1] During the Civil War, he served as Captain of the Rutledge Mounted Riflemen and then Ordinance Officer of his District. He also held command of the artillery on Morris Island. His eldest son, Cleland, died during the war.[2] He passed away on 14 Apr 1892 and was buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston.[3]
