William Charles Hughes was born on 31 March 1837 at Richmond, New South Wales, Australia [1][2], the thirteenth child of Mathew Hughes and Mary Small and his siblings were Susannah (Hughes) Devlin, Margaret (Hughes) Quaife, Ann (Hughes) Spurway, Robert Hughes, Mary (Hughes) Small, James Henry Hughes, Matthew Henry Hughes, Thomas Hassall Hughes, Elizabeth Hancox Hughes, Eliza Rebecca (Hughes) Small, Martha Hughes, Charlotte Hughes and Henry Francis Hughes.
He was a keen cricketer and became the captain of the Ulmarra Cricket Club in 1861 and, deciding to follow in his father's footsteps, he became the first teacher in the Wesleyan Church School at Ulmarra in 1862.
He then decided to give up teaching and enter the ministry and was ordained in 1866 in the Wesleyan Church. His first Church appointment was to Maryborough in Queensland then back to New South Wales in 1867 to Ulladulla then to the Lower Hawkesbury. Other appointments took him to Bowral, Bathurst, Maclean, Kiama, Yass and Forbes. He finally moved to Kogarah in 1899 where he died in 1900.
William married Mary Ann Clark on 9 April 1870 at the residence of the Rev. Richard Caldwell, at Glebe, New South Wales, Australia [3]. William and Mary had ten children, Alice Mary Hughes, Adeline Rebecca (Hughes) Howard, Frederick Hughes, Clarenza (Hughes) Marx, Isabella Hughes, Alban Ethan Hughes, Clarence Richmond Hughes, Clarence Richmond Hughes, Milton Hughes, Gordon Dallenger Hughes and Lilian (Hughes) Blanche.
Mary was always a great help to William in his work and on his death moved to Carlingford where she lived for another ten years.
William was 63 years old, when he died of inflammation of the lungs on 21 August 1900 at his redisence, the Wesleyan Parsonage, Kogarah, New South Wales, Australia [4].
The funeral service for William was conducted by Rev. Caldwell who had officiated at his marriage. In his address the Rev. Caldwell stressed the fact that William was honest, faithful and an earnest preacher, an ardent temperance worker and a man who had a deep interest in young people [5]. He was buried in the Rookwood General Cemetery, Rookwood, New South Wales, Australia [6][7].
