Biography

Cora (Humphrey) Henry was born in Texas.

Cora was born in 1895 in Bowie, Texas [1][2] She grew up poor in rural Texas, but remembered having lots of fun with her sisters and the horses. The family seems to have migrated back and forth from Texas to Missouri, I have not found birth records, except family bibles, for any of the 10 children born to her parents (still searching).[3][4]

Cora and her sisters worked as switchboard operators when in their teens. In 1916 Cora married John Harrison Henry (Henry-3786), from Missouri.[5][6]

Two infant girls came and were stillborn or died very quickly, the first in 1917. This information came from Cora directly to me, but I have found no official records. Cora's son Jack (John William Henry) (Henry-3787) was born in Missouri and was part of the family migration to California in the early 1920s. Cora and John along with all the Humphreys sisters and families, and a family called Delo, went to California [7] in several cars, traveling together. They camped along the way, sleeping on the ground.

Another girl, Martha Eva (Henry-3785), was born in 1924. Cora sewed and sewed, their clothes, curtains, made slip covers. During the Depression she did piecework, sewing at home for department stores. Her son Jack ( Henry-3787) was killed in WWII. She built the things she needed for the house with John's help. In 1946 while using the table saw she cut off the top joint of her thumb. She loved to fish and to pick berries to can.

Cora and John lived in Los Angeles [8] until Johnʻs death. She relocated to Chico, California to live near her daughter, Martha (Henry-3785) and grandchildren.

Cora died in Chico, California in 1980 [9]Cora was in an obituary in 1980 in Butte, California, United States. She died (age 84) on 26 January 1980 in Chico.[10] Cora Belle used the name Tex after moving to California, folks called her Tex because she had that accent (she kept a little of it all her life).
