Biography

John Hunt was born to Thomas and Elizabeth Jessup Hunt, more likely in West Farms, Westchester, New York Colony than in Rhode Island as this profile previously had it.

This John Hunt was not the man who died in Eastchester in January 1711, as this profile previously had it. That was John Hunt, his uncle.

His life was more colorful and his death in 1699 more exotic, according to his brother Robert:

Henry G. Jesup writes: An interesting letter may be seen in the Westchester County records, dated Aug.23,1699, and signed “Robert Hunt." It is addressed to his “honored father and mother," from the island of "MaUigaseo" (Mada- gascar), where he then lived, and announces the death of his brother John, Oct. 25, 1698, a cousin John Hunt having died Oct. 25th of the preceding year. He desires his brother Thomas to prove the will of his brother John, and take charge of any share he may have in John's estate until his return. As Thomas Hunt of the Grove Farm does not mention a son Robert, the above " Robert " and " John " may be the two of the same names included among the children of Thomas Hunt of West Farms. The letter, dated 25 Oct 1699, was in the Westchester County records 200 years later. [1]

Research notes

The record of that probate, if it took place, remains to be found and reported here. It looks like the two brothers were involved in some unusual activities. According to Descendants of Thomas Hunt,

ROBERT (367) was born circa 1672 (Ibid., p 4.). He died after 1725 (Ibid.). Referred to as "the Pirate" by Fish. He lived on 23 Aug 1699 at Madagascar (George T. Fish, Thomas and Cecilia Hunt descendants, p 63.). (And) JOHN (220) was born circa 1664 (Frank Doherty, Settlers of the Beekman Patent, Dutchess County, New York (Dutchess County, New York: Frank Doherty, 2002). Hereinafter cited as Beekman Patent Settlers.). He died on 28 Oct 1687 (Thomas Hunt Descendants, Manuscript, December 1936 Copy in possession of Everett Hunt, p 2.). He died on 25 Oct 1697. Referred to in Fish as prob also "Pirate.[2]
