James was born about 1836, possibly in Ballystrudder, Islandmagee, County Antrim, Ireland, the son of Andrew Hunter, a labourer.
In 1863 he married Jane Taylor in 1st Islandmagee Presbyterian Church. He was a labourer from Ballystrudder, Islandmagee and she was from Ballytober, Islandmagee. The witnesses were James Hill and Eliza Mann.[1]
