Biography

Mary Hyde was born on 15 Oct 1818 in Hayfield, Glossop parish, Derbyshire, England to James Hyde and Priscilla (Wild) Hyde.

Mary Hyde, born 15 Oct 1818, daughter of James & Priscilla, was christened on 7 Dec 1818 at New Mills Wesleyan in Glossop.[1]

Mary's mother passed away in 1825. Her father then married a woman named Mary (probably Mary Stafford, who married a James Hyde on 26 Dec 1829).

Mary had two daughters out of wedlock:

  1. Esther Hyde (1841-1870)
  2. Ruth (Hyde) Potts (1844-1907)
  • Her daughters were probably raised by her parents - in 1851 they were listed as Mary's sisters, but in 1861 they still lived with her parents but were listed as granddaughters.

In 1841 Mary Hyde (age 20) lived at Hayfield in Glossop with her father James (45), stepmother Mary (40), brother John (24), sister-in-law Elizabeth (20), brother Robert (18), and daughter Esther (0).[2]

In 1851 Mary Hyde (age 32, Weaver Cotton) lived in Whitfield, Derbyshire with her father James (54, Piecer Cotton), stepmother Mary (52), and two "sisters" [daughters]: Esther (9, Heald Bottomer) and Ruth (6, Scholar), as well as four lodgers: Geor Slater (31, Spinner Cotton), Thomas Slater (12, Piecer Cotton), Mary Slater (10, Scholar), and Hanh Bramhall (25, Weaver Cotton).[3]
