Biography

Johann Adam Hyder, son of Hans Michael Heider (Hyder) and Katherine Chasteen was born on 25 Jun 1731 in Upper Hanover, Montgomery, Pennsylvania, and baptized on 6 Jun 1731 in the Goshenhoppen Reformed Church in Montgomery, Pennsylvania. The attached image shows the record of his baptism.

Johann married Christiana _____ about 1761 in Virginia. Children: Elizabeth, Catherine, Mary, Adam, Isaac, Michael Solomon. Johann died in Hardy, Pennsylvania in Dec 1789.^[1]

Johann Adam Hider remained in West Virginia, probably on the same land owned by his father. As the eldest, he likely inherited the plantation. The West Virginia history books describe him as a prosperous farmer and leading patriot. He owned several “plantations” that he bequeathed to his children in his will, including one plantation “over the Allegheny Mountains.”

In the final estate settlement of Adam Hyder, his widow Christiana was appointed Executrix of his estate and next married Adam Neff; they administered Hyder’s estate until Neff’s death in 1818 or 1819. On February 23, 1819, the final settlement of Hyder’s estate was recorded in Hardy County, WV, Will Book No. 3, p. 19-20. Daughter Elizabeth Hyder married 30 Sep 1795, Joseph Pancake, They were married in Hardy, Virginia by Valentine Power.^[1]

Daughter Sarah Hyder, born in 1790 in Virginia. She married in Dec 1805 in Hardy, Virginia, Andrew Race, a farmer. They were married by John Thomas.

The old Hyder Family Cemetery is located beside Highway 48, a few miles northwest of the intersection with Highway 220/28. This cemetery is next to the Potomac River, on land believed to have been originally owned by Michael and Catherine Heider. (See FindAGrave)

Close to the cemetery is a small road called Hamp Hyder Way, named for Hampton Hyder, 1827-1888, son of Michael Hider, 1780-1841. There are several other children of Michael and Dianna Hider buried there. Michael Hider was the youngest son of Johann Adam Hyder, b. 1731. All the headstones there spell the name as Hider.
