Biography

Baptized 19 November 1747 in Labach, Herrschaft Landstuhl, Heiliges Römisches Reich (now Knopp-Labach, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany), the son of Hanß Velten (Valentin) Höh and Maria Gretha (Margaretha) Montzinger.

Simon, a tailor by trade, was a resident of Bedford County, Pennsylvania by 1789, when he appeared on the tax list for Woodberry Township.

His three daughters are believed to have been born in Bedford County.

Simon's will was written in Greenfield Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania on 24 December 1834 and probated 20 May 1836.

Research Notes

It has been posited by researcher, A. Wayne Webb that Simon had a son named Valentin (born ca. 1779) [1]. Webb based his theory on tax records, which show Valentine Hay first appearance as a single freeman in Bedford County, Pennsylvania in 1792. His argument was that this would be about right for a young man (son) who recently became of legal age.

However, it also would be right for someone who was a recent immigrant or new resident of the county.

Valentine died 23 years before Simon Höh/Hay and therefore would be omitted from Simon's will even if he was his son.

But a vital clue is that none of Valentine's children are mentioned in Simon's will nor does there seem to have been any inheritance of Simon's estate by Valentine's heirs. Valentine does not appear to have held any other property than that which he bought from his father-in-law, Harmon Dick.

Valentine was also noted as being over 45 years old in the 1800 Federal Census of Bedford County, Pennsylvania.

Based on these two facts, coupled with a complete lack of evidence to support a supposition that Simon had any sons who survived to adulthood, Webb's hypothesis does not appear to be valid.
