Sarah was born about 1841, her birth being registered at Hartismere, Suffolk in the last quarter of that year[1]. She was the daughter of Robert Ireland and Ann Woodward.
At the age of 7 she emigrated from England to the Colony of Natal with her father, her mother Ann and siblings John (13), Benjamin (11), Abraham (2) and Mary Ann (1). They travelled on the ship King William, under master Benjamin Avery, departing from London and Plymouth on 20 October 1849 and arriving into Port Natal on 23 January 1850[2].
Her brother Ocean Robert was born at sea on 4 November 1849. Sadly her father died on about 27 November 1849 on board the ship.
At the age of 23 she married 30 year old carpenter James Ainsworth on 2 April 1865 at the house of her brother Benjamin Ireland in Pietermaritzburg, Natal, by special licence[3]. The witnesses were Benjamin Ireland and Elizabeth Ireland.
Her husband James died on 11 June 1900.
She died some time before 1905 as she is not mentioned in her mother's death notice[4].
