Biography

Emmeline Marie irving was born on 15 August 1820 in Parramatta, Sydney, Australia. She was baptised Emmaline Irwin at St Philip's Church, Sydney on 10 September 1820^{[1] [2]} She was the daughter of Capt John Hamilton Irving and Ann Marie Partridge. Her paternal grandparents are known to be convicts and it is likely her maternal grandparents were as well.

Emmeline married David Reid Shearer, a surgeon from Glasgow, on 28 September 1840 in Sydney, New South Wales. ^[3]

Emmeline (Irving) Edmonds migrated from New South Wales to New Zealand.

Emmeline (Irving) Edmonds lived in Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand.

How she came to be in New Zealand is not known but she married William Edmonds in Kerikeri, New Zealand on 15 October 1856. ^[4] There were no children from the marriage.

By 1872 Emmeline and William had established a school in Wellesley St. ^[5] The school would have been closed down when state schools were established in 1877. ^[6] By 1890 William and Emmeline had moved to Western Springs. His occupation is given as settler so he was probably farming or this could be a euphemism for unemployed. ^[7]

By 1892 William and Emmeline were living in Lawrence St Herne Bay (also spelled as Laurence St) . William is working as a storeman and Emmeline has established herself as a music teacher but retired before 1896 giving her occupation as domestic duties. ^{[8] [9]}

William died on 13 January 1897. ^[10] Emmeline continued living at Lawrence St ^[11]

Emmeline died in Shelly Bay Rd, Ponsonby, Auckland on 25 July 1910 aged 89 from carcinoma of the abdomen and senile decay. Her occupation is music teacher. ^[12] and was buried at Waikumete Cemetery on 27 July 1910 in Anglican block E row 4 plot 96 ^[13]
