Biography

1646 Birth and Parents

Joseph Isaac's birth year is uncertain. Family Search gives the year as 1651; [1] Dowling estimates the year as 1652 [2]while Marshall believes it was "before 1646. [3]

Dowling gives Isaac's place of birth as Lincolnshire, England. [2] Family Search provides greater detail, making the place of birth to be Great Gonerby, Lincolnshire, England.[1]

Dowling states that Joseph Isaac was the son of Richard Isaac and Elizabeth Sharpe, Elizabeth in turn being the daughter of William Sharpe ca 1589-1615 married (1612) and Elizabeth Coney 1592- [2]

Siblings

Joseph Isacke is believed to have been the brother of Edward Isacke, whose will dated 3d Dec, 1693 [4] mentioned his wife, Jane, and his son, Sutton. The brother referred to in Edward Isacke's will is not named, but there is no doubt that he was the Joseph Isacke who had died in 1689 in Calvert County. [5]

1671 Marriage to Margaret

Mackenzie writes in 1912, "It is evident from (Joseph's) will that Margaret, the wife of Joseph Isacke, had been married efore she became the wife of Joseph, first to one Brown, and secondly to a certain Clifford. Her maiden name is unknown. [5]

Marshall is also cautious, stating that Isaac married Margaret (Maiden Name Unknown) Browne -- and that she did so in Calvert County, Maryland. Marshall has Margaret born before 1646 and died after 1689 in Calvert County, Maryland. Most importantly, Margaret was living in 1688 and named in her husband's will. [3]

Dowling finds marriage data in England: On 30 October 1671 in Lincolnshire, England, Joseph Isaac married Margaret Sharpe. She was born in 1651 and was deceased in 1696 in Calvert County, Maryland. [2][1]

Family Search gives more detail as to place, it was Forston, Lincolnshire and provides the name of Margaret's father, William S. Sharpe (1605–1687) Family Search provides dubious information about Margaret Sharpe's birth, stating it was in 1651 in Prince George's County, Maryland. This would hardly be consistent with a marriage in Lincolnshire 20 years later, and there was no Prince George's County until 1694. [6]

Family Search states that Margaret Sharpe died in 1696 in Calvert County, Maryland. [6]

Immigration to Maryland

Mackenzie simply reports the arrival of the Isaac family to Maryland "during the latter part of the seventeenth century." [5]

Mackenzie adds "There is a tradition in this branch of the family that the first settlers of the name, to come to this State, were two brothers, who came from England as officers of the English Government, in charge of certain political prisoners, among whom was the founder of the Bowie family in Maryland." [5]

Residence

Joseph Isacke lived and died in that part of Calvert County which, about 1705, became Queen Anne's Parish, in Prince George's County.

1689 Will and Death

Joseph Isacke of Calvert County wrote his will 29 December 1688 and died before 23 February 1688/9. [3]

Family Search [1] and Dowling [2] give the date of death as 23 February 1688/89 in Calvert County, Maryland; this is not the date of death, but the date the will was proved.

Research Notes

Marriage to Jane Beall

Family Search also shows Joseph Isaac married to a Jane Alexander Beall (?) (1659–1696) with a daughter Ann Isaac (1679-1757) resulting from this union. [1] Such a union would be inconsistent with a marriage to Margaret Sharpe prior to Ann's birth in 1679, and Margaret shown as the widow in the 1688 will.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:

Issac-30 and Isaac-21 appear to represent the same person because: The data is almost identical, but the spelling is slightly different. Isaac is the correct spelling I believe.
