Biography

Shearwood James married Martha Holladay. Baker-53780 There are others who believe that she was Martha Taliaferro (based on the name of her son & interactions in Orange Co., Virginia of his father Sherwood James & John Taliaferro. - (I don't know the truth - just offering a different opinion)

Multiple documents refer to grants to Sherwood James. The earliest is dated 23 Jun 1753. It is for 300 acres in Craven Co. on the high hills on the northeast side of the Wateree River.

A plat entitled "Pettypool, Philip, Plat For 93 Acres In Craven County. Date: 9/25/1771" refers to a tract of 93 acres on the High Hills of Santee in Craven Co. and in St. Mark's Parish. It is bounded on the northwest by land laid out to Sherwood James, on the southwest by Isham Rees, and on the south by William Rees.

WILL OF SHEARWOOD JAMES

IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN-

I Shearwood James of Saint Marks Parish Planter Being Sick and weak in body but in perfect mind and memory Thanks be given to God Calling to mind the Mortality of my body, and knowing that it is Appointed for all men Once to Die, I do make and Ordain this My Last will and Testament that is to say Principally and first of all I give and Recommend my Soul in the hand of Almighty God that gave it, and my body I Recommend to the Earth to be Buried in a Deceant Christian Burial at the Discresion of my Executors hereafter Appointed Nothing Doubting but at the general Resurrection I Shall Receive the Same Again by the mighty power of God and as touching Such worldly Estate wherewith it hath Pleased God to Bless me with in this Life I give Demise and Dispose of the same in the following manner and form as follows Viz.

Imprimis, I Lend unto my Loving Wife Martha James During her widowhood all my land and negro Stock of all kinds. Household furniture that I shall hereafter give and bequeath unto my two Sons Talefero and Sherwood James, I lend the same to her During her widowhood but in Case she should marry she shall be cut out of every thing except one hundred pound good and Lawfull money of the State of South Carolina to be paid her out of my two Sons Estates Annually for a maintenance During Life.

Item, I give and Demise unto my Loving Daughter Martha James two negroes named Alec and Tabby and also one Gray Horse Call.d Dalphin also one Cow and Calf Likewise one feather Bed & Furniture I give the same to her and her Heirs for ever.

Item I give and bequeath unto my Loving Son Talefero James one trac of land Containing three hundred Acres more or lefs being the trac I formerly lived on also nine negros Viz Dick Charity Joe Jacob Jinney Isaac Dery Jessy & Adam also my will and Desire is that when my son Talefero James Arives to the age of twenty one that all the remainder of my Estate such as Stocks of all kind Household Furniture Plantation utensils, Except such as I hereafter give and Bequeath to and Amongst my Other Children & grandchildren to be equally Divided Between my two Sons Talefero and Sherwood James by my Executors hereafter Appointed I give the same to him and his Heirs forever

Item I give and bequeath unto my Loving Son Sherwood James my manner Plantation whereon I now live Containing two hundred Acres Also one other trac of land being on Raffting Creek Adjoining M.r Robert Darrington Containing one hundred Acres also nine Negros Viz. Roger Nanney Jim Sam Tom Nelley Charles Jordan & Jerry also an equal Dividend with my son Talefero of my other Estate as above mentioned I give the same to him and his Heirs forever.

Item I give and bequeath unto my grandson William Rees son of Mary Rees my Daughter one Negro named Abram a Boy I formerly lent to my Daughter Mary Rees I give the same to him and his Heirs forever.--

Item I give and bequeath unto my grandson Rechy Rees Son of my Daughter Sarah Rees one Negro Girl named Luce I give the same to him and his Heirs forever-

Item I give and bequeath unto Nancy Brunson Daughter of Peter Brunson one Negro Boy named Robin I give the same to her and her Heirs forever-

Item I give and bequeath unto my Loving Daughter Elizabeth Singleton two Negros Bess & Lucky I give the same to her and her Heirs forever-

Item I give and bequeath unto my Grand Daughter Sarah Singleton Daughter of my Daughter Elizabeth Singleton one negro girl named Eve I give the same to her and her heirs forever-

And I do hereby Constitute make ordain my loving Wife Martha James and Joseph Singleton Executors of this my last will and Testament and making Note and Void all every other former Testaments Wills legacy bequeath and Executors by me made in any will before named willed or bequeathed ratifying and Confirming this and no other to be my last will and Testament in witness whereof shall hereunto set my hand and seal this 9 November 1782
