Biography

Hindrick Jans married Elske Alberts in 1706 in Nieuwe Pekela. Their original marriage record gives no date for anyone married that year. Children: Stientien (Dec 1 1709), Jan (Aug 28 1712), Jacob (July 7 1715), Stientjen (Oct 15 1719), Albert (1723). They lived in Nieuwe Pekela.

Some genealogies also list Arentijn (baptized Dec 1 1709, making her a twin of Stientijn), Jan (July 17 1715, making him a twin of Jacob), Grietijn (Oct 15 1719, making her a twin of Stientijn), Fennichijn and Barent (married Fennechijn Jans) as children of Hindrik and Elske. More children are always possible, but the first three are not listed in the baptism records at all, and the Barent Hindriks who married Fennechijn Jans is proved to be the son of Hindrik Goossens. We have no baptism record for Albert - he may not have been baptized as an infant since his father seems to have remained Mennonite. Or it could be due to many missed entries in the Nieuwe Pekela records.

We have no baptism record for Hindrik, therefore it's likely he came from a family straddling the fence between the Reformed and Mennonite churches. Because he would have been born 25 - 30 years after the people normally considered to be his parents were married, it's possible they had a son named Jan Jans Seeven and Hendrik is a son of this child. Hindrik is given no town he was from in his marriage record. So we can't prove his family or where he was from. All is assumed.

It seems Hindrick never made profession of faith in the Nieuwe Pekela Reformed Church. There was a Hindrick Jans who made profession of faith there in 1715, but there were several men with this name in the area. So Hindrick may have continued to be Mennonite. Not all his known children were baptized in the Reformed church.

In 1710 Hindrik Jans from Nieuwe Pekela borrowed 100 “Caroler” guilders. [1]
