John was born about 1816 in Barony Lanarkshire to William Jarvie and Anstruther Peatie. [1] His father William was a cotton weaver and John too was to enter this trade. Sometime around 1823 the family moved from Barony to Cambuslang which was becoming a new industrial centre for the textile industry. John remained in Cambuslang for the rest of his life working as a handloom cotton weaver until at least 1871.[2]
John married Janet Parker Fyfe on the 4th of December 1840 in Cambuslang.[3] The couple had nine known children.
John passed away on the 23rd of December 1883 at Springwells Cambuslang. It is not known where John was laid to rest.
