Tanguay lists his name as Louis Barré with a footnote indicating he was sometimes referred to as Louis Jean dit Barré.[1]
In his marriage record, his name is listed as Louis Jean Baré.[2] In his son Joseph's baptismal record, his name is listed as Louis Jean bar.[3] In his son François' baptismal record, his name is listed as Louis Jean dit Baré.[4] In the baptismal record of his daughter Geneviève born in October 1739, his name is given as Louis Baré.[5] In his oldest son Jean Baptiste's first marriage record[6] and his son François' marriage record[7] and his grandson Louis' baptismal record[8], he is listed as Louis Barré. In the 1743 baptismal records of his twin daughters Françoise and Geneviève[9], his daughter Louise' 1755 marriage record[10], his daughter Catherine's 1757 marriage,[11] and his daughter Marie Amable's 1763 marriage record[12], he is listed as Louis Jean dit Barré. In the baptismal records of both sons named Jean Baptiste[13][14] and his daughters Marie Louise[15], Marie Amable[16], and Marie Catherine,[17] his name is listed as Louis Jean. In Marie Louise's baptismal record, a margin note was added later which gives her surname as Jean dit Barre. His name is also listed as Louis Jean in the 26 Apr 1740 death record of his daughter.[18]
In his daughter Marie Thérèse's baptismal record, he is listed as Jean Baré.[19] His burial record lists his name as Louis Jean dit Barré.[20]
Many of the children's baptisms are indexed as if their father's surname was Louis Jean and he had no given name. Most of the children went on to use some form of the name Barré later in life, often dropping the name Jean. By Louis' grandchildren's generation, the family name seems to have settled on Barré.
Birth
Louis Jean Barre, son of Jean Barre and Catherine Andru, was born about 1700 in Fresnoy-la-Rivière, Oise, Prefect (capital) of Beauvais in Picardie region, Oise Department, France.[21][22][23] His burial record from January 1760 says he was about 60 years old.[20]

Research Note
I went through the parish records online at the departmental archives for Oise for all the parishes in Beauvais for the year 1700 and could not find Louis' baptismal record. However, the necessary pages for the parish of Saint-Laurent are not online as they are in poor condition and require special treatment before posting images. Further review by someone with better transcription and translation skills and/or over a broader date range or when the missing records are posted would be useful.
