Biography

John Middleton Jeffreys was born about 1831 at Mumbles, Glamorgan, Wales. He was a son of Richard Jeffrey and Jane Middleton.

John came to Australia in the mid 19th Century. He settled at Avenel, near Seymour, in Victoria and worked as an agricultural labourer or, as known in Australia, a station hand.

He married Margaret Broughton on 1st June 1863 in Avenel, Victoria.[1] Some of their sons were to serve with State And Federal units of Australia in the Boer War at the same time as their cousins husbands were building up their military reputation. The highest rank attained by any of three sons was Sergeant. One son died in South Africa.

John passed away about 21st May 1890 at Nagambie, Victoria. [2]
