Life Sketch Note: LifeSketch. CIVIL WAR EXPERIENCE. Enlisted on 4171861 as a Private. On 521861 he mustered into "D" Co. RI 1st Infantry. He was discharged on 611862 at Washington, DC. He was listed as:
- POW 7211861 Bull Run, VA.
- Confined 7231861 Richmond, VA (Estimated day; sent to Alabama).
- Paroled 5281862 Salisbury, NC.
Woonsocket Patriot and RI State Register. Woonsocket, RI, Aug 16, 1861. "Leland Jenckes, a private in the First Regiment, who was wounded at Bull Run, has been heard from at Manassas. His father, William A Jenckes, has received the following letter: Manassas, VA, July 27, 1861. My Dear Sir: At the request of a person who has just seen your son, I write to say to you that he is alive, though wounded. His wound however, I am informed is not dangerous. He is receiving as much care and attention as is possible under existing circumstances and such as we are able to give our own wounded. I apprehend he has had reason in no way to find fault with the conduct of his captors; and I hope in due time he will be restored to his friends, resolved never again to be induced to leave them for the purpose of subjugating a free people and a sovereign state.
