Biography

Elmer Johnson is a part of US Black heritage.

Elmer was born in 1921 in Louisville, Kentucky. He was the son of Harry Johnson and Mollie Wathen.^[1]

In 1940 Elmer was the oldest child living with his parents and siblings in Louisville. At age 18, he had completed a year of college.^[2]

Elmer was married to Lelia Bedingfield. In 1950 they were living with three sons in Louisville where Elmer was a sergeant in the City's Police Department.^[3]

Elmer was a Major with 30 years experience in the Louisville police department when he retired in 1976. He was only the 2nd African-American to achieve that rank.^[4]

He passed away in 1979 in Louisville, Kentucky. He was buried in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville.
