Samuel Ealy Johnson Sr. was born on 12 November 1838, in Alabama to Jesse Johnson and Lucy Webb Barnett.[1] One merged file gave a birth place of Wedowee, Randolph, Alabama.[citation needed]
Civil War
On 29 August 1861, at Lockhart, Texas, Samuel enlisted as a private in Captain John J. Myers' Company, Caldwell County Rangers, and later he was assigned company B of the 26th Cavalry (Debray's Regiment, Davis' Mounted Battalion), CSA. In September, 1862, he received a $50 bounty certificate for having served for twelve months. A regimental return of the organization for March, 1865, shows that he deserted on 14th March at Anderson. No later record was found.[2]
26th Cavalry Regiment was formed in March, 1862, using the 7th Texas Cavalry Battalion as its nucleus. It was considered to be one of the best disciplined regiments in Confederate service and was assigned to H. Bee's and Debray's Brigade in the Trans-Mississippi Department. The unit served along the Rio Grande and in January, 1864, and was involved in the operations against Banks' Red River Campaign, then returned to Texas where it was stationed at Houston and later Navasota. Here the 26th disbanded in May, 1865.[3]
