From Pat/Rosemary: 'Bertie' was a Textile Exporter for his own company - G.H.H. Jones.
He travelled on ships - to China, India, the U.S. and elsewhere. He also exported English Cotton to India to be fabricated into Blackout Material for England during WW2.
In 1928, when Pat his youngest was born, he lived at 'The Limes' on Harboro Road, Ashton on Mersey.
Check out 'The Limes'. Nice!
By 1949 was Exporting Textiles and living at St. Leonard's in Harboro Road..
Bertie was all over being a Cotton/Silk/Textile Merchant and Shipping Co. traveler; India, Far East & maybe New York where he might have found his wife Mathilda.
Lived most of his life in & around Manchester (Moss lane, Stanton House on Washway Road, 'The Limes' on Harboro Road, St. Leonards) and in later years lived in Northumberland at the Hadrian Hotel in Wall village, with (his daughter) Pat and her husband, Ken Eades.
He liked to play chess, savor Cadbury's Dark Bourneville chocolate and smoke those oval Passing Clouds - in the pink pack! Also known to enjoy Bell's whiskey.
It is difficult to find a 'fer sure' birth record but the 1891 residence census record shows him at home in Chorlton-on-Medlock.
Existent family lore quotes Bertie as saying 'you'll find it all in Ilkley graveyard'. This would be referring to his (catholic) Hauxworth lineage. Here's a list of some Hauxworth memorials. at the All Saints churchyard. How did Bertie know this? I guess Anna Maria told him?
Gillie also remembers 'canny as a Welshman'. I suspect this as a reference to his grandparents, Emmanuel Jones and wife Anne Roberts, both born in Denbighshire. Information is hard to - unearth - on these two.
Pat remembers him as being 'raised by the Jesuits'. There was also talk of 'illegitimacy' but I think that the 1891 residence record disproves that.
I think more likely is that, towards the end of the 1890's, his father John Jones had died and widowed wife Anna/ie Marie was having 'financial difficulties', Probably the youngest, Bertie & Robert, were 'unaffordable' and 'left on the doorstep' of a Jesuit College - to be brought up and educated.
That said, it could have been the Chetham Hospital School. Check it out!
You can see the two missing children from the original 1901 census. Just Mum and the two eldest living together. Note that Anna Maria's marital status says Widow!
What is cool is that by 1911 Bertie and siblings were all living together - again - at 58 Hartington St. in Moss Side, Manchester. Anna Maria appears to be in the Nell Lane Infirmary Workhouse. John's whereabouts are a mystery. (note that the 1901 census record, above, describes Anna Maria as a widower.)
And a record with both Bertie's birth date and death year [1]
That's all we know!
There is this 1901 Chetham Hospital School record for a George Jones. Note that middle initials are missing. Intentional? Maybe! Here's a transcription.
