Biography

Susanna Jones[1] was born in 1764 to Jonathan Jones and Hannah Hopkins[2] and, in 1784, married Obadiah Holt. Susanna Jones Holt lived more than half a century in Clinton, Kennebec, Maine where she died on 18 Apr 1855. She is buried in the Town House Hill Cemetery in Clinton. [3] Susanna's third great grandmother is Rebecca Nurse, a victim of the Salem, Massachusetts hysteria.

Susanna's Parentage

While Daniel Franklin Secomb's History of the Town of Amherst, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire gives Susanna's father as Joshua Jones, [2] it appears likely that this is incorrect. Susanna's grave marker puts her birth in 1864,[3] but The New England Historical and Genealogical Register shows Joshua's wife gave birth to a son, Aaron, in March 1864. The Register gives Susanna's birth on 30 March 1864 to Jonathan Jones and Hannah Hopkins.[4] [5]

30 March 1864 is also the date given for "[Jones} Susanna, d. of Jonathan and Hannah" in Wilmington records of births, marriages and deaths, from 1730 to 1898.[6] [3] [5]

From HUGH JONES OF SALEM, MASS., AND HIS DESCENDANTS:[7] [4] [5]

He was a farmer and a man of enterprise, acquiring extensive landed property in Wilmington and in Monson, N.H., and attaining the rank of Lieut. of the local military company. His will, made May 23, 1753, the day before his death, mentions wife Elizabeth, sons Jonathan and William, who had received their portion; sons Joshua and David, to whom was left real estate in Wilmington; sons Caleb and Josiah, who received lands in Monson, N.H.; son Samuel, who was to have a trade and 13.6.8 when of age; and daughters Martha Carter and Elizabeth and Mary Jones. (Middlesex Co. Probate.)
He married in Woburn, Aug. 7, 1721, Elizabeth, born about 1703, died after 1765, daughter of William and Ruth (Richardson) Russel of Salem Village, and granddaughter of William Russel of Salem Village by Elizabeth Nurse, his wife, whose mother, Rebecca Nurse, was a victim of the Salem witchcraft delusion of 1692.

21. Ensign Jonathan4 Jones (Lieut. Jonathan,3 Samuel,2 Hugh1) was born Jan. 20, 1722-3, in that part of Woburn set off in 1730 as Wilmington. At the time of his marriage, he settled on a farm in Wilmington, which was deeded to him out of the extensive estates of his father, where he resided until his decease, Nov. 26, 1765. On Apr. 6, 1763, he was commissioned ensign of Capt. Benjamin Jaquith's company of Wilmington militia. (Mass. Archives vol. xcix, p. 36.) He died intestate, and on Nov. 16, 1773, all his real estate was settled on the eldest son, Russell, who paid to his brother Jonathan and sisters Hannah, Lucy, Phebe, and Susanna, 30-4-6 each, for their shares. (Middlesex Co. Probate.)
He married, Dec. 31, 1747, Hannah, born Apr. 29, 1724, died Apr. 3, 1766, daughter to Benjamin and Hannah (Wilson) Hopkins of Billerica.

24. Joshua4 Jones (Lieut. Jonathan,3 Samuel,2 Hugh1), born in Wilmington, Mar. 23, 1731, inherited by his father's will a part of the latter's extensive estates in that town, on which he settled, and died in the summer of 1765, administration on his estate being given, Sept. 3 of that year, to his brother Josiah,4 of Andover. The probate papers state that the widow Ruth was given 22.5.0 "in consideration of her quitting the estate," and that the deceased left three minor children, Joshua, Hepzibah, and Aaron. of whom Capt. John Flint of Reading was appointed guardian. (Middlesex Co. Probate.)
He married first, about 1759, Hepzibah -, who died in 1764. . . .

iii. Aaron, b. Mar. 15, 1764 . . .

Another Joshua, the son of Caleb and the nephew of Jonathan and Joshua, lived in Milford, New Hampshire. Joshua's father, Caleb, married about 1748 and had children between then and 1773. The oldest this Joshua would have been in 1764 is 16 and that seems young to have fathered Susanna.[9] [5]
