John Judde was born in Wiltshire, England.

John Judde was born about 1375.

He was present regularly at Salisbury council meetings from 1397.

Around 1400 he married Gillian Mercer.

"In the time of Walter Shirle [10 Henry IV] (1408/9), [it was ordered] that there should be two chamberlains to receive the debts owed to the city, to pay the debts which the city owes, to repair houses, and to pay, meet, and discharge other charges on the city; and that there should be a comptroller for them; for this were elected as chamberlains John Becket and John Judde, and as their controller Thomas Rede, who were to account annually to the mayor and other auditors assigned to them."[1]

Elected as collector 8 Dec [....]
Elected King's coroner on 8 Jun 1412
Elected as coroner for the city on 25 Sep 1413

"Wilts.—Philip Butiller, of Wodehall, sued John Judde, of Salisbury, and another, for the manor of Salterton, which Henry le Notte, of Solihull, gave to Ralph le Butiller and Hawise, his wife, and the heirs of their bodies. De Banco. Mich. 2. Hen. 5. m. 121 dorso." [1414-1415][2]

On May 20 1416 John Judde, lord of Salterton, and others were directed to "levy and collect from all cities, boroughs and towns, and from all secular lords of towns and other lay persons having goods and possessions, and from others both great and small in the county of Wilts." in support of the ongoing war with France.[3]

Elected mayor on 2 Nov 1417 [5 Henry V]

In 1421 he was a party to the lease of land for the Trinity Hospital, Salisbury.[4]

He died after 1429 and before 1453.[5][6]

John Judde is the earliest documented member of the Judd(e) family in Wiltshire. He lived at Salterton Manor.[5] DNA evidence from ancestors strongly suggests a connection to Cheddar Man who lived in the nearby Cheddar Gorge, Somerset during the Mesolithic period.

Research Notes

  • According to email from family genealogist George Judd of Idmiston, Wilts. on 13 Apr 2019, John was almost certainly the ancestor of Thomas Judde (1490-dec) of Winterbourne Gunner. George also suggests in a later email that he had a second son, Robert Judde.
