Biography

Ellen and her twin sister Elizabeth were born on January 20, 1857 in New York, probably in Livingston County. They were the daughters of Irish immigrants who came to the United States after the potato famine.

In 1860 she was living in Geneseo, Livingston County, with her parents, twin sister Elizabeth, and brother James. Age 3.^[1]

1864 - Ellen, her mother and siblings entered the poor house on November 1, after her father's death. Ellen was there for 222 days before being discharged on June 11, 1865 "to York."^[2]

Have not found the family in the 1865 state census.

Some time before 1870, her mother married John Cronan, another Irish immigrant. It was also John's second marriage. In 1870 the family was living in Mount Morris.

In 1875 she is listed twice, with her mother^[3], and with her husband Edward and their daughter Fanny.^[4] This may indicate there were already problems with this marriage; or it may just be that her mother gave the census-taker her name, along with the other children.

In 1880 she was living in Covington, Wyoming County with her first husband Edward and their 3 children. Age 23. Family's surname is listed as Watson.^[5]

In 1900 she is shown living with her second husband David Dygert and their two children in Rochester. Age 43. Mother of 6, five living. Says married 15 years, but this is not accurate; Margaret and Maud were born before David and Ellen married. Son James Watson, from her first marriage, is living with them and listed as a boarder.^[6]

On September 27, 1917, Ellen married her third husband, Joseph Mannix, in Monroe County.^[7] Joseph died on February 23, 1919.

1920 - living with daughter Maude's family on Genesee St. in Rochester. Age 63. Widow.

In 1925, Ellen was living with daughter Margaret & Margaret's son William. She was 68.^[8]

1930 - died on March 10, in Rochester, New York^[9] Buried March 14 in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery: Section H., Lot/Tier 18, Grave #23.^[10]
