Biography

John was born about 1781[1] at Woodnesborough, Kent, England[2], probably the son of Stephen Kemp and Mary Kemp (see notes). He was probably baptised on the 8th July 1781 at St. Mary, Woodnesborough, Kent, England[3].

John, a bachelor married Sarah Smith, spinster, 30th October 1802 at St. Nicholas, Ash, Kent, England. Witnessed by George Minter, Thomas Mount {parish clerk} and Daniel Ralph {parish clerk}[4]

John was occupied as an agricultural labourer[5].

He was living at Ash Street, Ash, Kent, when passed away aged 75 years in 1856 and was buried on the 19th September 1856 at St. Nicholas, Ash, Kent, England[1]. This was the address that his wife was living at in 1861.

Research Notes

It is possible that John was born at Woodnesborough but baptised at neighbouring Ash. There are a few possible baptisms for John:

  • John son of John & Mary baptised 21st September 1777 at St. Nicholas, Ash
  • John son of Stephen & Mary baptised 8th July 1871 at St. Mary, Woodnesborough ( but John didn't name any of his sons Stephen)
  • John son of Benjamin & Esther baptised 27th October 1782 at St. Nicholas, Ash (but John didn't name any of his children Benjamin or Esther)

Naming patterns were usually important at this time period, so it would seem the most likely baptism was that with parents John & Mary in 1777. However a John Kemp b. 1777 died at Woodnesborough in 1850.

Of the 10 children that John & Sarah had, son John and daughter Sarah were probably named after their parents, Susannah, Henry, Harriet and George could have been named after maternal aunts and uncles. That leaves Isaac and Elizabeth. Isaac is quite an uncommon name, so looking at other Isaac Kemps of Woodnesbourough & Ash may help as John may have had a brother named Isaac.

  • An Isaac Kemp (b. 1784) was buried at Ash in 1854.
  • An Isaac Kemp (b. 1786) son of Benjamin & Esther was buried at Ash in 1788.
  • An Isaac Kemp (b. 1787) was buried at Woodnesborough in 1824. He would probably have been the Isaac son of Stephen & Mary baptised 1788 at St. Mary, Woodnesborough.

It is therefore most probable that Stephen and Mary were the parents of John.

There were no PCC wills for any Kemps of Ash or Woodnesborough to help differentiate which parents are the correct ones. Would need to check local Canterbury wills at the Canterbury Cathedral Archives, but as they were agricultural labourers, it is unlikely any family left wills.
