Biography

Martha was born in 1675 to Peter Keurlin and Elizabeth Doors. She married Thomas Potts in 1699 and had 5 children (see Thomas's profile).Martha passed away in 1716.

Metgen “Martha” was born in 1682 in Waldniel, Kempen-Krefeld, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany. She was the daughter of Johannes Pieter Keurlis and Elizabeth Doors. She was Christened on 22 Nov 1682 in Krefeld, Rheinland, Prussia. She immigrated with her parents to the American Colonies. They arrived in Philadelphia on the ship “Concord” on Oct. 6, 1683 and were among the original settlers of Germantown, Pennsylvania.

She married Thomas Potts on Aug 20 1699 at the Abington Monthly Meeting, Abington Township, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They had five children together:

1. Elizabeth (Potts) Walker (1699-1744)
2. Mary (Potts) Cleaver (1705-1767)
3. John Keurlis Potts (1710-1768)
4. Martha Potts (1712-1714), died infancy
5. Martha Potts (1714-1715), 2nd daughter

She passed away in 1716 in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (age 34 yo). After she passed away, her husband remarried to Magdalen Robeson in 1718 and they had three children together.

Notations on Thomas Potts and Martha (Keurlis) Potts: "At a monthly meeting, held the 20th of 8th mo., 1699, whereas Thomas Potts and Martha Courlin (Keurlis seems to have been the German orthography), having declared their intention of marriage with each other vefore two monthly meetings, inquiry being made by persons appointed and found clear from all others on account of marriage, did accomplish their marriage in the unity of Friends, as is signified by thier marriage certificate". Martha was the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Keurlis, and had come from Germany with her parents, in company with Pastorius, 16 years before. An allotment of land was made to Peter Keurlis in the laying out of Germantown, and his name appears frequently in the early records as one of the original householders. ..."….
