Caleb Kirkland was born 03 Aug 1802 in South Carolina[1] to Caleb and Sarah Kirkland.[2][3][4]
He married Elizabeth Kirkland on 15 Sep 1825 and they first lived in Henry County, Alabama 5 miles south of Abbeville, but moved to Walton County, Florida in 1833 residing there for 7 years. In 1836 during an Indian raid their home was completely burned down, leaving them homeless and on 01 Jan 1839 they returned to Henry County, settling the old Kirkland homestead on the Columbia and Newton Road about ten miles from Columbia. They remained there until the death of Caleb in 1867.[1][3][4] He and Elizabeth had the following known children:
The following article appeared in the 4 July 1929 issue of the Abbeville Herald (Abbeville, Alabama): "RECORD OF CALEB KIRKLAND Caleb Kirkland lived at Old Pleasant Plains Church and surrounding vicinity. The last Home Corning Day given at uncle Levi Kirklands' his wife's home, Elizabeth Kirkland just prior to her death. She had 136 children and decendants. As she lived to the age 82 leaving the family of children as follows: Mathew, Isaac, Wilson, Ransom, Sidney, and Levi, and girls are Catherine, Mary, Margaret, and Rachel. All of whom have passed except Aunt Rachel Knowles, who only now survives and known as the family of the said Kirkland in Southeast Alabama, are known to a great height, and as a part of the Kirkland and Brackin are now pretty numerous, therefore his relation bring this family and makes them one of the most noted families in the whole community. As they have grown from these two families some of the most noted characters such as preachers, doctors, lawyers, school teachers, and ___ too numerous to mention. And among the business world, there are merchants, druggists, bankers, mechanics, and farmers. Just toward the last Home Coming Day at Concord, June 12, 1929, when more than five hundred assembled from the different sections and spent the day in song, prayer and preaching and not a jar of discord. All ate to their fill and went their way rejoicing and looking forward to the day, 1930. Rev. Levi Kirkland. Committee." (Spelling is as it appeared in the newspaper.)
Caleb died 01 Apr 1867[1] and is buried at Old Pleasant Plains Cemetery, Headland, Henry County, Alabama.[2] The cemetery is located north of the Henry and Houston County line road from Headland to Columbia, on a farm road, almost impassable -- a neglected cemetery.[7]
