Susanna Kirstaetter was born about 1771 in the Province of Pennsylvania, daughter of John Leonard Kirstaetter (1747–~1790) and Anna Elizabeth Zehrung (1749–~1790).[1]
A Canadian branch of the Kerstetter family probably started about 1800, when two of Leonhardt Sr.’s children moved from Northumberland County to the area just north of Toronto, Ontario. Henry or Heinrich Kerstetter was born about 1779 and was still a minor when his father died in 1790. Henry’s guardian John Snider (Snyder or Schneider)[2] married Susan or Susanna Kerstetter in the early 1790s. All three apparently made the trip to Canada about the turn of the century.
Hinrich Kirchstatter, Johann Schneider, and Mrs. Susanna Schneider were listed as joint sponsors at the very first reported baptism in 1808 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Vaughan Township, Ontario, about 20 miles north of Toronto. The church was started by German Lutherans arriving from Somerset County in southwestern Pennsylvania.[3]
John and Susan, born about 1771, were probably married in the early 1790s and had two children. Susan died about 1809, and John married a woman named Elizabeth. John’s will, dated May 4, 1835, and registered on Jan. 12, 1841, names his four sons, but does not give his wife’s name. His children by Susanna were:[3]
Susanna died about 1809 in Vaughan Township, York, Upper Canada, aged 37.
