Biography

Children: Jan (1645). In 1652 Gese Smits is listed on the Zuidlaren Reformed Church membership list of 1652 as Hind. Klinckhamer's widow. She is number 86 on the list. This is the only record I could find of Hindrick and Gese. Zuidlaren's baptism records for the 2 decades around the time Jan was born are missing.

Hendrik's name with no -s on the end means he was a blacksmith. Gese's name with an -s on the end means she is directly related to the blacksmith. Smits may have simply been her husband's other last name, but it's also possible she was a Smits from another town.

Hendrik might have been the son of Boele instead of Hendrik - his one mention has no patronym with it. However, it's more likely he was the son of Hendrik since that gives him a reason to take the name Hendrik. Some families seem to have given a child the father's or mother's name instead of a grandparent's name.
