Elizabeth Knowles was born in about 1849 in St Helens, Lancashire. She was the daughter of Richard Knowles and Sarah (Deardon) Knowles. Her birth was registered in the first quarter of 1849, in Prescot district.

Elizabeth married William Rowe on 21 Mar 1869 at St Peter's Church in Parr, Lancashire. William was above age (21 or more) and a boiler maker; Elizabeth was 20. Neither had been married before, and both were living in Parr. Their fathers were named as Charles Rowe (boiler maker) and Richard Knowles (miner). The witnesses were Richard Knowles junior and Elizabeth Collier.

Their son Charles Rowe was born in 1869 in St Helens, Lancashire. His birth was registered in the third quarter of the year, in Prescot district.
