Note: BIOGRAPHY: Note: He was the sixth son of Samuel and Elizabeth Knowles. Hemd. Mary Matilda Kellog 23 Dec. 1852 in Pontotoc Co. MS. The followingstory is told about Mary. It seems a British ship Captain married aFrench girl. He brought her to America and left. She never saw him again.Later she gave birth to a daughter which she named Mary Matilda. It isuncertain whether she was still living when the move to Mississippi wasmade for she grieved herself to death over the disappearance of herhusband. However her daughter was the same person who married BenKnowles.

BIOGRAPHY: Ben served in the Confederate Army as a Pvt. in Co. E of the31st Inf. Ben and his family moved to TX. probably in 1877. They lived atfirst in Williamson Co. In the 1890's they moved to eastern NM. Thelittle unnamed town where they settled came to be called KNOWLES afterBen established a Post Office. They lived in a dug-out and a lean-to forseveral years. Later he moved one mile South and built a house. He owneda store, a wagon yard and operated the telephone exchange. Mary died in1909 and was buried at Knowles. In 1910, his daughter Sylvia and heryoungest child came to live with him. He died. 9 Nov. 1925 at Weir, TX.while visiting relatives there. He was buried. at Weir. There is notombstone
