Biography

Charles Gustav Koch was born 23 April 1879 in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He was the fourth of nine children born to Gustav Koch and Rachel Vollrath Koch. In June 1880 he lived on Hickory Street in Wilkes-Barre with his parents and three older siblings.[1]

Sometime between 1883 and 1886 his family moved to a farm in Dennison Township in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.[2][3] The family attended Saint Paul's Lutheran Church in White Haven, Luzerne County, and Charles was confirmed there on 1 October 1893.[4] In June 1900 he and his three brothers lived with their widowed mother on the family farm in Dennison Township.[5]

Charles married Minnie Keenapple on 12 April 1913 at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church, and Rev. H. H. Brunnig performed the ceremony.[6] Charles and Minnie raised four children:[7]

  1. William J. Koch
  2. Ida Frieda Koch
  3. George C. Koch
  4. Gertrude Mae Koch

In 1920 Charles, Minnie, and their first two children lived with his widowed mother on her farm.[8] He, his wife, and their four children lived on Jerusalem Road in Dennison Township in 1930.[7] He, Minnie, and their two youngest children lived on Middlebury Road in Dennison Township in 1940. Their home was worth $700.[9]

Charles was employed for more than twenty years by the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company as a laborer.[5][6][8] In April 1930 he worked as a laborer on the township road.[7] From 1940-1942 he was employed by the Work Projects Administration in Hazleton, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania as a road laborer.[9][10]

Charles registered for the draft on 12 September 1918 at Freeland, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. At that time he was described as medium height, medium build, with blue eyes and light hair.[11] He did not service in the military.[7] He again registered for the draft on 27 April 1942 at the Second National Bank Building in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. In 1942 he was described as five feet eight inches tall, weighing 155 pounds, with blue eyes, gray hair, and a ruddy complexion.[10]

On 30 July 1950 Charles was hit by a car while walking along a road[12] and he died from those injuries in the Hazleton State General Hospital, Hazleton, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He was buried on 2 August 1950 in Lot #90A of Laurel Cemetery in White Haven, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.[13][14]
