Biography

Johanna Mary Oakes was the second of nine children born to Gustav Koch and Rachel Vollrath Koch, and the first of their children born in the United States.[1] She was born on 24 December 1874 in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. [2][3][4][5] She was confirmed, along with her father's youngest brother, Christian Andrew Koch, on 6 October 1889 at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church, White Haven, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.[6]

Hannah Koch and Daniel Oakes applied for a marriage license on 18 September 1893 at the Luzerne County Court House in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Rev. Herman H. Bruening performed their marriage ceremony at Moosehead, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, on 28 September 1893.[2][7] Johanna and Daniel raised nine children:[8][9][10]

Hannah would go for walks in the woods and pick edible wild vegetables. Her favorite was wild asparagus.[11] After her husband died, she lived with her son, Daniel. In 1937, she lived with him and his new wife at 641 Martins Lane, Bethlehem, Lehigh, Pennsylvania.[12] She lived with her daughter, Eleanor Oakes, at 126 Towanda Street, White Haven, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in 1940.[13] Hannah had diabetes and had both her legs amputated due to complications from the disease, and Eleanor cared for her until she died.[11][14]

Hannah Oakes died 6 September 1947 at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.[5] She was buried next to her husband on 9 September 1947 in Lot #1215 of the New Section of Laurel Cemetery in White Haven, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.[4][15][16]
