Biography

Children: Sybrech (1617) It seems Jan had a sister named Anna Jans. No other children for this couple. Both were from the Nieuwe Haven when they were married.

3 Sijbrich Jans’ were married in 1640 & 1641; none in the years around them. I found baptism records of 2 Sijbrich Jans’: from the names of witnesses of her son Eduwaert’s children (Fokel), it narrowed it down to Jan Jansz and Fokel Roemers.

Koesvelt means “cow’s field”.

It seems Jan had a sister named Anna Jans and a brother named Isbrant Jans (Fockel Roemers was a baptism witness to their children too). It was easier to see if I could find Jan’s parents under Isbrant. There were 7 Istrants born to a Jan between 1580 and 1600. Isbrant married Alit Pieters, children Tryn (1621) – their only record. It wasn’t enough information to determine who his parents were.

I found the original marriage record very difficult to read – it really helps that there is a database for Enkhuizen that those more used to old Dutch script can translate for the rest of us. The “Koesvelt” in the original record could easily be short for “Koningsvelt” which is found in just a few other records at the same time. A Daniel Jansz Konincxvelt married Clara Theophilus on August 3 1618; their child Samuel (born 1619) had as baptism witness Jan Coningvelt. Abraham Jansz Coningvelt married Susanna Isaaks from Rotterdam a decade later (April 15 1629); their daughter Susanna (1630) had Jan Koningvelt as baptism witness (Isaac, 1631, had someone else). Perhaps Daniel and Abraham were brothers of our Jan and the baptism witnesses are actually our Jan. The only family that made sense to be theirs was Jan Jans and Trijn Taems / Tharms – besides having a Jan and a Daniel they had a Sijbrech, the name of Jan’s only child.
