Joseph LaFollette is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A067810.

Joseph La Follette, was born in France about 1745. He and his brothers, George and Charles, together with their father and mother, were Huguenots who fled to America during the Reign of Terror in France.

Their father was killed during the Revolutionary war, during which time Joseph La Follette settled in New Jersey, and there he first married Lydia Carter on 18 Jan 1761. They had two children first a boy named Isaac in 1769, who only lived about one year, their second child, Mary was born about 1770. Then Joseph's first wife Lydia, died sometime after Mary's birth and 1771, when he married his second wife, Miss Phoebe Goble. After their marriage, they moved in Kentucky.

The 1810 U.S. Census shows Joseph, age over 45, living in Hardin Co., KY with three females, one over 45 (presumably wife Phoebe), one age 20-44 (Mary or Abigail), and one under 10. No slaves. Son Jesse is listed next to him, next farm over? An Isaac is listed nearby, age 20-44, with three females, two under 10, and one 16-19.[1]

In the autumn of 1828, Joseph La Follette, Sr., accompanied by his son Jesse, went to Indiana and the following winter stayed with his nephew Joseph La Follette, and later lived with his son Usual La Follette. He died in 1834 and was buried in the family cemetery on grandfather La Follette's old farm in Russell township. Family history also relates they moved to Indiana because it was a free state and Kentucky was a slave state. The 1830 census for Putnam Co., Indiana shows a male, 80-90, living with Joseph LaFollette. Presumably that is Joseph, Sr. [2][3]
