Thomas Hamlin Laidley, son of Thomas and Sarah Osborne, was born September 1793 in Morgantown, Virginia (later West Virginia). As a child he was not well, and did not attend school regularly. He was taught at home.
He married Sarah Barclay in 1828 and they had at least 10 children.
He studied medicine with other doctors and became a physician that way, evidently rather than by attending school. His son, John B, became a physician and joined him in practice in 1856.
Census reports seem to show that the Laidley family stayed close to home and didn't marry until later in life. This may have been a way for them to avoid having a large family and avoid having to struggle financially.
Several of the men became physicians and lawyers, the women seemed to be wives.
Thomas retired from his practice in 1875. He died in 1881 at the age of 86; Sarah in 1886. The family was Protestant, though of a couple of different denominations. They were Democrats, primarily Union in their support of the Civil War, although some were not.[5]
