Biography

Birth

Charles was Born in Towamba, NSW, Australia on 14 Mar 1894. His father was Allan Laing and his mother was Ruth (Atkins) Laing [1]

Marriage

Charles married [Sattler-60|Bertha (Sattler) Laing]] on the 2nd April 1923 in Singleton, NSW, Australia. [2] Charles and Bertha had 4 Children

War Service

  • Charles enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 4th March 1916 at the age of 21 years 9 months and was assigned to the 19th Reinforcement 2nd.
  • On his Enlistment form his father was listed as next of kin and Allans address was Towamba via Eden.Battalion. His service number was 6041.
  • Charles embarked for England from Sydney on the 22nd August 1916 on the A18 Wiltshire.
  • On the 18th September 1916 he disembarked in Durban for medical reasons. -The casualty form says the illness was Mumps.
  • Charles Reembarked on 3rd October 2016 the Euripicho and disembarked at Plymouth on 26th October 1916.
  • On the 13th December he was assigned to proceed to France and was taken to the 1st Australian Divisional Base Depot Etaples on 14th December 2016.
  • On 18th December Charles joined the 2nd Battalion
  • On 29th December Charles was in a field hospital suffering from PUO - Pyrexia (fever) of Unknown Origin.
  • On 8th January Charles was cleared for duty and released from Hospital.
  • From the war timeline the Germans were starting a staged withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line. It was during this staged withdrawal on the 3rd February that Charles was shot in the side piercing his liver and Ribs.
  • He was evacuated to No 3 Stationary Hospital and on 8th February evacuated to England on the H.S Dunluce Castle- A hospital ship built in 1903. On 10th February he was admitted to The 3rd Southern General Hospital Oxford.
  • On 14th March 1917 Allan Laing was advised that Charles condition was improving.
  • On 25th June 1917 Charles was released from Hospital and transferred to No.2 Command Depot in Weymouth to prepare for return to Australia and then on 27th July Returned to Australia on HMAT A64 Demosthenes arriving on 29th September 1917 and discharged from the Army on 30th October 1917

Death

Charles died on 21st January 1978 in Armidale, NSW, Australia. [3] The Eden Magnet Reported on February 16, 1978 C.H. LAING Mr. C.H. Laing formerly of Towamba and Tenterfield passed away in the Armadale Hospital on January 26th, 1978. Mr. Laing was born 84 years ago at Rockton and was educated in Towamba. He commenced his first job as assistant to the late Mr. Alf Robertson in the Towamba Butter Factory. He served in WW1, was wounded and invalided home in 1917. He then went to the North Coast where he worked in various butter factories retiring as manager of the Tenterfield factory. Mrs. Laing passed away two years ago and a family of four children and twenty-nine grandchildren mourn his loss. Remaining members of the family are three sisters, Mrs. Lewis of Bombala and Ada and Sadie of Sydney. Brothers Jim, Hector, Donald, William and sister Bella all predeceased him. [4]
