Biography

Joshua Lamb was born on April 6, 1746. He was the son of Thomas Lamb and his wife, Sarah (Moore) Lamb. The family were members of the Society of Friends (Quakers) and Joshua's birth was recorded in the minutes of the Center MM (Guilford Co.), colonial North Carolina. The family lived in Rowan County, North Carolina.

Joshua Lamb was born on 6 Apr 1746 in Guilford County, NC. He was living in 1779 in Randolph County, NC. "1773 Debtors of Col. John McGee, Orange County, NC," The North Carolina Genealogical Journal, Vol I, No.1, January 1975, lists Joshua Lamb on the 1779 Tax List, Randolph County, NC: "Persons that had not taken the Oath of Allegiance, refusing or neglecting to return Inventories of their taxables, Joseph Hinds District.... Joshua Lamb..." [1]
Joshua Lamb was married to Miriam Powell (daughter of Henry Powell and Elizabeth Roberts) on 7 Oct 1767 in New Garden MM, Guilford, NC. Hinshaw, Vol I, NC, "A list of early members at Center, [Guilford County] extracted from the minutes of New Garden Monthly Meeting includes ... Joshua Lamb, Robert Lamb. New Garden Monthly Meeting minutes, Rowan County, recorded their marriage." Page 556, "1767, 10, 7, Joshua Lamb, son of Thomas, Centre, Rowan County, married Miriam Powell."
Their marriage announcement reads: "Joshua Lamb, son of Thomas [Lamb], Rowan County, married Miriam Powell, daughter of Henry [Powell], Rowan, 7 October 1767. Witnesses Thomas Lamb, Henry Powell, Jacob Elliott, Jacob Lamb, Isaac Beeson, Sarah Lamb, Elizabeth Lamb, Ann Beeson, Thomas Dennis, Elizabeth Powell (mother of the bride), Priscilla Elliott, Sarah Mills.” [2]

"1793, 1, 12, [Dec. 1, 1793]: Jemima, Martha, Huldah and Miriam Lamm, daughters of Joshua, granted certificate to Cane Creek MM."

A partial record of Joshua & Miriam's children may be found on page 660, Center MM. Miriam Powell was born about 1748 in Contentnea, Wayne, NC. Hinshaw, Vol I, pp. 69, 70, Perquimans Monthly Meeting, regarding her parents, "1746, 6, 6, [June 6, 1746] Henry Powell produced certificate from Pagan Creek Monthly Meeting, Isle of Wight, Virginia, to marry; 1746, 6, Henry given letter to marry Elizabeth Roberts; 1761, 5,5, [May 5, 1761] Henry and wife and family requested certificate to New Garden MM." Page 567, New Garden MM, "Henry Powell and wife and children received on certificate from Perquimans Monthly Meeting dated 1761, 5, 3. [March 5, 1761]" Entries on page 687 indicate her parents were in Randolph County, N.C. as late as 1808. I have Joshua Lamb that is currently showing up as a brother. I wanted to confirm with you before I merge. I have a second wife of Joshua as Esther. I show that they moved to Indiana and there is his Will. It lists all the children including my ancestor Josiah, son of Esther.

After sending a private message to the profile manager for Mary Allcock on 17 Jan 2016, and receiving no response as of 29 Feb 2016, I have disconnected her as wife of Lamb-459.

Please note on the proposed merge of Lamb-459 and Lamb-3339 that 3339 shows a wife Mary "Allcock." I believe this is confusion with Mary Alcock, b. 1652, who married Joshua Lamb of Roxbury, Massachusetts. That Joshua is about 100 years older than this one, and no relationship to this Lamb family has ever been established.
